TOWER EAST
WALTER GROPIUS, founder of the Bauhaus Institute in Germany, changed the architecture of the twentieth century. He was a pioneer in such design innovations as wrapping a building in transparent walls of glass rather than traditional heavy masonry. This threshold insight provided the basis for modern buildings which brought in light and connected people's working and living space to the landscape outside.
Tower East is the last of Gropius' buildings completed in this country. Completed in 1968, its construction marked the beginning of a new stage of suburban business development in Cleveland. The building stands on "park-like" site and combines innovative architectural features such as sun-shaded and open cornered concrete exterior walls, walnut paneled corridors and high ceiling lobbies with terrazzo floors and quartz-aggregate walls. Gropius strived for excellence in all his work.
